Biography

Research interests include the evaluation of efficacy and mechanisms of interventions (e.g. exercise, nutrition) to prevent respiratory infections or better manage respiratory diseases such as COPD. Arwel’s previous research projects (PhD and postdoctoral positions) have involved measurement of in vitro/ex vivo markers of immunity in various sample types (blood, saliva, sputum) in athlete and clinical populations.

More recently, Arwel has used integrated in vivo markers (delayed-type hypersensitivity tests using novel antigens, influenza vaccination) to assess immune responses to strenuous exercise or as models of immune function in COPD patients with recurrent infections (frequent exacerbators). Arwel is keen to develop and test the use of human infection challenge studies in the evaluation of new treatments/interventions or further understand the mechanisms contributing to susceptibility to infections in people living with COPD.
