Biography

I am a clinician scientist specialised in Paediatric Infectious Diseases. I lead a research group working on the pathogenesis of malaria and identifying mechanistic correlates of protection against malaria. We use -omics approaches such as dual RNA-sequencing to characterize host-pathogen interactions in humans and perform mechanistic validations in model systems. We make use of the ability to measure total body pathogen load in malaria to help us to interpret host responses. We use mathematical modelling to estimate the dynamics of parasite load and then elucidate its mechanistic determinants. I also have a longstanding interest in co-infections, arising from my PhD research which defined the mechanism by which malaria increases susceptibility to non-Typhoid Salmonella infection. I am co-director of the Imperial College Network of Excellence in Malaria.
