Organisation: ImmunoBiology Ltd
Biography
Dr Colaco graduated in Biochemistry from the University of London followed by a PhD at the NIMR, Mill Hill where he was infected with immunology. After a brief remission at CALTECH, Pasadena and the ICRF Laboratories, London he relapsed into a lectureship at the University of Cambridge via a Royal Society fellowship at EMBL in Heidelberg.
In remission after setting up the first molecular biology laboratory at the Medical School, he moved from academic to translational science in 1990, founding the QRF to develop technologies for the conversion of fragile biologicals into shelf-stable formats which were commercialized by Quadrant Healthcare plc and subsequently the US biotech Elan Inc.
In 2000, he relapsed into immunobiology with the seminal proposal that the Dendritic Cell (DC) was the key integrator of innate and acquired immunity, founding ImmunoBiology Ltd to develop the next generation of vaccines for infectious diseases and cancer. His chronic infection symptoms manifest in the development of effective multi-subunit, protein vaccines against pathogens and personalised DC-based cancer immunotherapy.
