Dr Marie O’Brien is Former Chief Scientific Officer and co-founder of ReNewVax Ltd. She was previously Senior Scientific Manager of the Centre for Global Vaccine Research (CGVR), University of Liverpool. She developed expertise in the preclinical development of human vaccines with a particular focus on streptococcal infectious diseases. She trained as an immunologist and obtained her PhD at the University of Guelph, in Ontario, Canada subsequently completing postdoctoral positions at UT Southwestern Medical Centre, Dallas, Texas and Trinity College Dublin. Dr O’Brien has led research projects investigating the pathogenesis of, and host immunity to, streptococcal diseases using bioinformatics, multi-photon imaging and in vivo murine disease models. For the past 7 years, she has worked on the preclinical development of RVX-001, a broad coverage pneumococcal vaccine, as well as that of vaccines targeted at other streptococcal species e.g. S. agalactiae (or Group B streptococcus), with an emphasis on maternal immunisation and mother-to-neonate vertical disease transmission. Her ambition is to develop de-risking tools to accelerate vaccine development, including high sensitivity ex vivo co-culture models, and controlled infection human infection models.
