Biography

Extensive experience in the conduct of clinical vaccine trials; observational, epidemiological studies, including surveillance programmes; and studies assessing vaccine impact, effectiveness and safety in South Africa. Provided the first rotavirus vaccine effectiveness data from Africa and showed the tremendous impact of the oral vaccine in reducing the incidence of diarrhoeal hospitalisations in young children in South Africa. National principal investigator on a multi‐centre Phase 1/2 clinical trial evaluating safety and immunogenicity of a novel vaccine – a parenterally‐administered non‐replicating rotavirus vaccine. Building laboratory capacity for rotavirus and other enteric serum antibody testing in South Africa. Main area of expertise includes rotavirus diarrhoea, in particular rotavirus vaccines and factors affecting immunogenicity and effectiveness of these vaccines. Areas of research interest: enteric disease epidemiology, aetiology and prevention.
