Biography
Dr Sudhir Babji is a physician scientist, trained as a clinical microbiologist from Christian Medical College, Vellore. His work involves defining the factors responsible for the lower oral vaccine responses in resource limited settings.
Working in a public health laboratory in Vellore, India, he has conducted studies to see the impact of concomitant infections, gut inflammation and maternal factors on enteric vaccine response. He has set up validated in-house assays for measuring the immune response to rotavirus which is being used in the various rotavirus vaccine trials and has let to licensure of 2 rotavirus vaccines developed in India.
He has also set up 11 color flow cytometry experiments to understand the role T helper cells and gut homing T regulatory cells in oral poliovirus vaccine response. Sudhir's interests are to define the cellular immune responses to enteric infections and vaccinations, combining this with data generated on gut inflammation, concomitant infections and micronutrient status to generate a composite understanding of the immune response. This data should inform vaccine strategies in resource limited settings.
