Biography

Professor Basnyat is the Director of Oxford University Clinical Research Unit-Nepal (OUCRU-NP), Medical Director, Nepal International Clinic (NIC), and Professor of Medicine and Physiology at Patan Hospital\Patan Academy Health Science (PAHS), Nepal.

With a particular interest in Tropical Diseases and High Altitude Hypoxia, the unit at Patan Hospital has published many ground-breaking randomized controlled trials (RCTs) since the initiation of OUCRU in 2003. Recent research from the group has shown that typhus commonly mimics typhoid and that, importantly, the treatment is different. The spin-offs of these RCTs have included the study of the epidemiology of enteric fever and crucially research in antimicrobial resistance, an understated problem in South Asia.
