Biography

Professor Boily’s research focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases, with a focus on HIV and sexually transmitted infections in both developing and developed countries using a combination of mathematical modelling statistical and empirical techniques/studies. In the past years, my team has been involved in mathematical modelling studies to maximise the impact of interventions using a combination of prevention tools, including vaccination, on HIV, HPV and HSV infections and related diseases at population-level. Our studies are conducted in close collaboration with international collaborators, which ensures that our models are informed by the best epidemiological, behaviour and clinical data and that the results are adequately translated into public health recommendation and action locally and globally. We conduct our research in a variety of settings including India, West Africa, Southern Africa, US, Canada. Our research has been funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC), UNITAID, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation (BMGF), WHO, USAID, NIH, the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), and CANFAR. Prof Boily has supervised many successful MSc and PhD students and teach on the MSc in Epidemiology and BSc in Global Health in the School of Public Health.

Dr Boily currently lead the HIV prevention trial network (HPTN) modelling Centre (https://hptnmodelling.org), which has the mission of designing and conducting mathematical modelling and computer simulation studies anchored to the best available data to support and inform HPTN research activities and directions and to inform the design of HPTN clinical trial designs of HIV prevention.
