Biography

I am a clinician scientist with a joint roles as Professor of Immunology in the Nuffield Department of Medicine in Oxford University and Florey Professor of Infection and Immunity and Honorary Consultant in Infectious Diseases in Sheffield University. For over 25 years I have led a research programme focusing on host-pathogen interactions in human infection with HIV and other viruses. A key focus of my early work was the study of immune responses to HIV in highly-exposed but apparently uninfected people, notably sex workers in Nairobi and the Gambia, and subsequently in Kenyan infants born to HIV+ mothers. I remain an active clinician, formerly on the adult Infectious Diseases service in Oxford and now in Sheffield. I am also a Governing Body Fellow at Christ Church, Oxford, and a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians and the Academy of Medical Sciences. I am currently President of the Royal Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and also chair the Education and Training committee.

Between 2001 and 2004 I was Director of the Oxford Centre for Tropical Medicine, which supports research in tropical medicine, particularly in the Wellcome Trust-funded research units in Thailand, Vietnam and Kilifi, Kenya. Between 2004 and 2008 I was seconded to West Africa as Director of Research in the Medical Research Council Laboratories in the Gambia, the UK’s oldest and largest overseas research unit, where I developed a new research interests on HIV-2 as a model of attenuated HIV infection and the development of the infant immune system in response to infections and vaccination in early life. Since returning to the UK I have built new collaborations in Africa focusing on two major aspects of paediatric HIV infection/exposure – the mechanisms underlying the poor health of HIV-exposed uninfected children, and the pathogenesis of the chronic complications of HIV in older children and adolescent survivors of vertical HIV infection.
