Biography
Tom Wilkinson is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Southampton, Faculty of Medicine and Honorary Consultant at University Hospitals Southampton. He trained at the University of Cambridge and Barts and the London School of Medicine and completed his PhD at UCL studying disease mechanisms driving infective exacerbations of COPD. He is co-lead of the Southampton COPD group, Respiratory lead for the Wessex CLAHRC and his research group focuses on understanding the mechanisms which contribute to the vulnerability to and impact of respiratory infections in patients with chronic lung disease and the development of novel approaches to vaccination and targeted therapy. He heads a group of 30 researchers and a 5 year, £10m collaborative programme to develop new vaccines for patients with chronic lung disease.
Tom has established novel models of respiratory infection including human challenge studies using live respiratory viruses. This work in influenza and RSV infection has provided proof of concept for T cell vaccines and siRNA therapeutics. He is a member of the BTS Scientific and Domiciliary Oxygen committees. Tom’s integrated clinical and research programme was awarded the UK NHS Innovation of the Year award in 2011/12 and the European Respiratory Society Maurizio Vignola award for Innovation in Research in 2012.1-2 paragraphs about your research and main research interests
