Biography

I am a paediatrician specialising in infectious diseases and a researcher into vaccines against pneumococcal and other infections that are important for infectious morbidity in children, particularly in poorer countries. I have developed a whole cell bacterial vaccine against pneumococcal infection through the pre-clinical phase and this vaccine is now in large scale human trials in Africa and Asia with funding support from PATH. My group has recently completed work comparing murine and human responses to a panel of pneumococcal antigens in
collaboration with Adam Finn in the UK. My group has developed a novel methods for conjugating polysaccharide antigens to protein carriers which we hope will greatly simplify and reduce the cost of manufacturing conjugate vaccines making them more accessible in poorer countries.
