Biography
Hugh Adler studied medicine in University College Dublin and subsequently trained in general internal medicine in St Vincent’s Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin. In 2014 he completed a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine followed by a spell in South Africa where he undertook research in paediatric HIV epidemiology and the role of HIV and malnutrition in invasive bacterial infections in children.
Since 2015, Hugh has worked with the Respiratory Infection Group in LSTM as part of the Experimental Human Pneumococcal Carriage (EHPC) collaboration. He has been part of the clinical team carrying out a Gates Foundation-funded randomised controlled trial into the effect of the live attenuated influenza vaccine on pneumococcal carriage, and is currently leading a study of EHPC in older people. His research interests include pneumococcal disease and biology, controlled human infection models, immunosuppression, and global health.
