Biography

Pongphaya Pongsuwan is a MIST (Malaria Infection Study Thailand) Programme Manager at Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit for malaria and other topical diseases research. Her main responsibilities are identifying vaccines for CHMI studies, develop CHMI study protocol, study planning, study conduct as well as ensure quality of the entire study processes.         

For the past 34 years, she has been working in private/academic/NGO health organizations which her roles and responsibilities include operation management, research management, partnership management, and team building/start-up. Her areas of specialization include clinical/operational research in various areas, project development, project implementation, team building/start-up, monitoring, training, drug access, supervision, regulatory affairs, and treatment/public health guideline implementation across Asia.

She has been responsible for budget planning and negotiation as well as budget monitoring, resource management and has been working with many sponsors/funder (government and private) including U.S. National Institute of Health (responsible for SEAICRN projects), U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Oxford University, Welcome Trust, Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), and Pharmaceutical companies. Her management experiences cover Asian countries such as Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Cambodia, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, and Korea.

She is also a guest lecturer for Drug Development, Good Clinical Practices and Research Ethics, Research Management, and Quality Management for Ministry of Public Health, various universities, and various organizations in Asia. She is also an ethical reviewer for the clinical research projects at Ministry of Public Health.

Prior to joining Mahidol-Oxford Research Unit, she was a Senior Market Access Manager at Pfizer where she managed market access and outcome research function and was an Director at Asia Expert and Consultancy that provided consultancy and be a represesntative of Medicines for Malaria Venture in Asia. She was also an Associate Director at Quintiles Thailand where she managed drug development projects, staff, and strategic alliance. She was also an Associate Director at FHI Regional Office (I-NGO) where she provided leadership and management all drug development and health projects in Asia.
