Biography
Prof Andrew MacDonald’s research addresses some outstanding fundamental questions about activation and modulation of cellular immunity by a specialized type of innate immune cell - dendritic cells - with a particular emphasis on Type 2 inflammation, which is a defining feature of infection with parasitic worms (helminths), as well as being responsible for widespread suffering in allergies.
The overarching goal of his research is to transform understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which inflammation is initiated, maintained and regulated, to enable rational design of innovative therapies targeting cells or their products to combat helminth and allergic disease.
