Biography
Kanta Subbarao’s work at the CDC focused on the molecular characterization of seasonal influenza viruses for vaccine strain selection and her laboratory was also responsible for characterizing novel viruses; she described the first case of human H5N1 influenza virus infection in Science. At the NIH she directed a laboratory in the intramural research program of NIAID that was focused on influenza vaccine research, specifically in generating pandemic vaccines, investigating their immunogenicity and efficacy in mice and ferrets and their immunogenicity in Phase I clinical trials in humans. In her current position as Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, she advises the WHO on viruses to be included in annual seasonal influenza vaccines. Her current research efforts are directed at understanding the biology and immune responses to influenza viruses and vaccines.
